Pál Udvary was born in Budapest, Hungary in 1900. He was the son of Géza Udvary, an artist who had studied in Paris and Vienna and brought the Romantic style back to his home country when he was appointed Professor of Figural Morphology at the Hungarian Academy of Applied Arts in 1901. Géza also offered private drawing lessons at home until 1931, and Pál studied directly under him. Pál continued his education studying with Ferenc Helbing and Ignác Ujváry before entering the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest in the workshops of Ede Balló and Viktor Olgyai. He became known for his landscape and genre scenes, especially compositions focused on circuses and caravans of nomadic Romani, as well as equestrian themes. Little is known of his later life, and his work did not receive much recognition outside Hungary until after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the establishment of the Third Republic. He died in 1987.
