Owen Cullen Yates (1866–1945), known professionally as Cullen Yates, was an American painter celebrated for his Impressionist landscapes, coastal scenes, and still lifes. Born in Bryan, Ohio, Yates studied at the National Academy of Design in New York under William Merritt Chase and Leonard Ochtman, and later at the École des Beaux-Arts, Académie Julian, and Académie Colarossi in Paris under Jean-Paul Laurens and Benjamin Constant. He was an early participant in the Old Lyme Art Colony in Connecticut around 1900, where he became known for his plein air painting. Yates maintained a long-term residence and studio in Shawnee-on-the-Delaware, Pennsylvania, where he painted many of his signature works. He was elected an Associate member of the National Academy of Design in 1908 and became a full Academician in 1919. His works are held in institutions like the Brooklyn Museum, which houses his 1907 oil painting Landscape. Yates's paintings continue to be appreciated in the art market, with notable sales such as Lingering Snow, Shawnee On Delaware, Pennsylvania fetching $43,750 at Christie's New York in 2011.
