Our Lady of Guadalupe is a revered title of the Virgin Mary, associated with a miraculous apparition that is said to have occurred in 1531 near present-day Mexico City. According to tradition, the Virgin appeared to an Indigenous man named Juan Diego on the hill of Tepeyac, speaking to him in his native Nahuatl language and asking that a church be built in her honor. As a sign for skeptical church authorities, she caused roses to bloom in winter and left her image imprinted on Juan Diego’s tilma (cloak)—a cloth that still exists today and is enshrined in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe. This image depicts a brown-skinned Mary clothed in stars, standing atop a crescent moon, and has become a powerful symbol of Mexican identity, Catholic devotion, and cultural syncretism. Our Lady of Guadalupe is considered the Patroness of the Americas and is celebrated each year on December 12 with pilgrimages, masses, and cultural festivals.
