Orrefors Glassworks was a manufacturer of crystal glassware and art glass in the Swedish village of Orrefors in Smaland. They were founded in 1898 on the site of an older iron works, and until 1913 they produced mainly window glass and bottles. When Consul Johan Ekman bought the factory that year Orrefors started to produce drinking glasses, vases, and other houseware. Their first attempts at art glassmaking were in the French style, developing a technique in which air was trapped within the walls of the glass. Called Ariel, after the character in William Shakespeare’s “The Tempest,” it was inspired directly by Art Nouveau work by the French artist Emile Galle. Their clean lines that suggest a frozen liquid were lauded when they were on display at the Paris Exhibition in 1925, and they have been sought after by collectors ever since. The glassworks closed in 2012, with the Per Ekstrom Museet, an art museum, opening in its place.
