Rococo emerged in early 18th-century France as a decorative, lighthearted reaction against the grandeur and strict formality of the Baroque style. Flourishing during the reign of Louis XV, it emphasized elegance, asymmetry, pastel colors, and playful themes of love, leisure, and nature. Rococo was especially prominent in interior design, furniture, and painting, with artists like Antoine Watteau and François Boucher creating scenes filled with romance and whimsy. The style’s intricate ornamentation—featuring shells, vines, and curves—reflected the tastes of the aristocracy, but it eventually declined later in the century as critics began favoring the simplicity and moral seriousness of Neoclassicism.
