Georg Jensen (1866-1935) was a Danish silversmith and designer who founded the renowned company that bears his name. After studying sculpture and working in ceramics, he apprenticed as a silversmith under Mogens Ballin. In 1904, he opened his own silversmithy in Copenhagen. The company gained international recognition by winning the grand prize at the 1915 World's Fair, with American publisher William Randolph Hearst buying their entire exhibition. Despite financial struggles, the company survived thanks to investments from industrialist Peder Anders Pedersen and his son, Anders Hostrup-Pedersen, who championed the brand in America and organized exhibitions at prestigious institutions like the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Louvre. Today, the Georg Jensen brand, still producing goods at its original Copenhagen factory, is owned by the Finnish consumer goods group Fiskars, with production still taking place at the original Copenhagen factory.
