In art history "Old Master" refers to any painter of skill who worked in Europe before about 1800, or a painting by such an artist. In theory "Old Master" applies only to artists who were fully trained, were Masters of their local artists' guild, and worked independently, but in practice, paintings produced by pupils or workshops are often included in the scope of the term. Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) was a prolific seventeenth-century Flemish painter, a master of the Baroque style that emphasized movement, color, and sensuality, known for his Counter-Reformation altarpieces, portraits, landscapes, and mythological and allegorical history paintings. His legacy is the stylistic reference of “Rubenesque,” which describes plump and fleshy figures, mostly women. Popular with nobility and art collectors throughout Europe, Rubens' masterpieces and what his workshop in Antwerp produced were both highly valued in his own lifetime. He is also one of the most valued “Old Masters” in today’s art market.
