Unlike traditional Impressionism, which depicts recognizable scenes softened by color and light, Abstract Impressionism removes or obscures subject matter entirely, focusing instead on mood, texture, and the expressive possibilities of paint. Artists in this style often applied pigments in loose, layered strokes or veils of color, creating shimmering, immersive surfaces that evoke emotional or sensory experiences rather than direct representation. While not as aggressive or dramatic as Abstract Expressionism, Abstract Impressionism retains a strong sense of spontaneity and personal vision. Key figures include Helen Frankenthaler, Sam Francis, and Joan Mitchell, whose works convey a lyrical, often meditative exploration of form and color.
