The Stressless line of furniture was created by the Norwegian-based company Ekornes AS (originally called J. E. Ekornes Fjærfabrikk) in 1971. Jens Ellingsen Ekornes (1908-1976) started the company in 1934 after having worked for his brother Sigurd at Ørsta Lenestolfabrikk since his early twenties. Starting in 1947 he began making yearly trips to England, France and Germany to explore evolving trends in furniture-making. He also visited the United States several times from the 1960s onward, where he was one of the first to successfully market their prime item, an innovatively designed mattress. In 1960 Jens’s brothers Leif and Martin became co-owners, and in 1966 Ekornes started production of lounge furniture, increasingly focused on combining comfort and functionality. Jens was appointed a knight of the 1st Class of the Order of St. Olav the same year he introduced Stressless for his contributions to the Norwegian economy and way of life. After his death, Martin took over as chief executive, and his nephew Jens Petter Ekornes became CEO in 1980 until 1987 when control of the company passed out of the family’s hands. Today, Stian Ekornes remains on the board as a representative of the family legacy, and since the 2010s an additional production facility in America as well as a flagship Stressless Brand Store in London has expanded their reach considerably.
