Norman Laliberte (1925–2021) was a prolific American-Canadian artist celebrated for his vibrant and whimsical works that spanned painting, sculpture, printmaking, and large-scale installations. Born in Worcester, Massachusetts, to French-Canadian parents, he spent his formative years in Montreal, where he began his artistic education at the École du Musée des beaux-arts. After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, he utilized the GI Bill to further his studies at the Institute of Design in Chicago, earning both bachelor's and master's degrees in art education. Laliberté gained international acclaim in 1964 for designing 88 colorful banners for the Vatican Pavilion at the New York World's Fair, a project that propelled his career and led to numerous public commissions, including installations at Logan International Airport in Boston. Throughout his life, he authored over twenty books on contemporary art and held more than 100 solo exhibitions across North America. His works are featured in prestigious collections such as the Smithsonian Institution, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and the Nelson A. Rockefeller Collection. Known for his joyful, symbolic style that blended childlike wonder with sophisticated design, Laliberté left an indelible mark on the art world before passing away in 2021 at the age of 95.
