Noel Thornton Skidmore (1923-2015) American, M/M. Mixed media painting on paper. Depicting a couple hugging each other, looking up at another figure in the sky who appears to be mother nature. Signed Noel Skidmore in the lower right. Information on the artist is on the back. Noel Skidmore was born in Porterville, California. An unusual talent for drawings and making things as a boy led him as a teenager to building intricate wooden models of ships and airplanes. Skidmore was in the Air Force and Europe during World War II. After the war, he stayed in Europe and studied there, and eventually returned to the United States, and settled in San Francisco. For many years, landscape was an emphasis of his work, especially the misty seascapes unique to the Bay Area. Later, he turned to the classical form of bas-relief sculpture, exploring the potential of the medium in cast paper. Some of these works combined Impressionistic use of color and poetic imagery with the sensuous sculptural forms possible in cast paper. Skidmore thinks that those new works as "tone poems in color light". His work is included in many public and private collections, and has shown with several Bay Area galleries.
