Nico van Rijn was a Dutch painter who lived in the small village of Laren, near Amsterdam. He studied art at the Academy of Visual Arts in the Hague from 1911 to 1913 and worked as a painter, draftsman, and graphic artist who enjoyed woodcuts. He also worked with Dutch luminists and post-impressionists such as Ferdinand Hart Nibbrig, William Singer, and Co Breman. He was very eccentric and so immersed in his paintings that he couldn’t give them up, and he suffered financially because he rarely sold his works. He suffered from a religious mania in the 1930’s and was committed to a mental institution by his brother. Nuns provided food for him and he gave them paintings in exchange. This oil on board by Nico van Rijn is titled “In de Shaduw” in Dutch, which means “In the Shade” in English. If you look closely, you can see a girl sitting in the shade of a tree in the middle of the painting. It was probably done in the early 1900’s. It has a gallery label on the back with the title of the painting, and it appears to be signed “RIJN” in the lower left corner of the painting. The overall size is 18 x 14 5/8 in. wide and the sight size is 11 5/8 x 8 1/4 in. wide.
