Nicario Jiménez Quispe (born 1957) is a Peruvian folk artist renowned for preserving and expanding the tradition of Andean retablo art. Born in Ayacucho, Peru, into a family of retablo makers, he learned the craft from his father and began creating intricate three-dimensional narrative scenes at a young age. Jiménez immigrated to the United States in the 1980s and has since become one of the most recognized contemporary retablo artists, adapting the traditional form to depict not only Peruvian culture, festivals, and religious themes but also modern social issues and immigrant experiences. Working primarily with hand-modeled and painted figures housed within colorful wooden shrine-like boxes, his art has been exhibited internationally and is included in major museum collections, helping bring Andean folk art to a wider global audience.
