Nepalese Buddhist Thangka, Kamadgiri style. A careful reverent pointillism technique was used to apply vegetable dyes on cotton with brocade. In good vintage condition with signs of fraying due to age. Much more than a mere object of aesthetic value, a thangka is a part of practiced religion. Originally painted by lamas or Buddhist priests, over the years, thangkas came to be made by lay painters. They underwent rigorous training in the traditional art, and worked with the guidance of lamas. A thangka could depict a deity, a mandala (geometric figure with symbolic meaning that is also used as an aid in meditation), or a spiritually significant event from the life of a Buddhist master. While thangkas are now also painted for sale, they are integral to practiced Buddhism. Size: 49 1/2 x 30 in. #2069
