Born in Jerusalem in 1919, Nehemiah Persoff was a prolific character actor whose dynamic career spanned over five decades in American film, television, and theater. After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, he trained at the Actors Studio and built a reputation as a versatile talent adept at dramatic, villainous, and comedic roles. He accumulated over 200 screen credits, earning widely recognized performances in film classics such as Some Like It Hot (1959), Yentl (1983), and as the voice of Papa Mousekewitz in An American Tail (1986). Health challenges in the mid 1980s prompted him to step back from acting, leading him to discover a passionate second career as an accomplished watercolor painter. Persoff continued to paint and display his artwork in California until his death in 2022 at the age of 102.
