This beautiful limited and numbered edition maritime book is titled "The Naval Achievements of Great Britain from the year 1793 to 1817 illustrated with a series of 57 colored plates and other colored plans by James Jenkins wiith a new introduction supplied by the publisher", published by Sim Comfort Associates in London in 1998.
The book is number 40 of only 600 copies; the first 150 were bound in blue goat, as here, the rest were bound in blue buckram, and all were signed by the publisher.
The book was first published in London by Harrison in 1817, then again in 1820, 1827, and 1835, and this is a facsmile of the first edition from 1817, and in exquisite condition. It is 3/4 bound, with horizontal gilt bands, gilt lettering, and gilt devices on the spine, marbled boards, blank endpapers, the title page and limitation page, an eight-page introduction to the 1998 edition, a afull-paged colored frontis of Lord Nelson, followed by a facsmile of the original vignette title page, then a list of the original subscriber's names and a List of Plates that date from 1793 to 1816, a full-paged colored portrait of the Earl of St.Vincent, a dedication page and a facsmile of the original 6-page introduction, the text has unnumbered pages that run from B2 all the way to the end, adn 55 beautiful colored plates and one black and white image near the end.
The book is an important visual source of the great naval battles of the period and includes the history for each battle, and in some instances the casualties and ship names involved in each engagement, and the majority of watercolor plates were done by Thomas Whitcombe and one by Nicholas Popock, including images for the Battle of the Nile and the Battle of Trafalgar, where Lord Nelson lost his life.
The book is 4to. and measures 13 3/8 x 10 3/8 in. wide and is absolutely exquisite - the binding is tight and the pages and plates are clean as a whistle- not a hint of foxing or browning anywhere. Thereis a small penciled note on the front flyleaf that reads "1000 9/ 7 /00" and the green slipcase has some rubbing and light marks on the covers and the top and bottom of the case, and that's it. Only 3 are listed for sale online, and they start at $585, so this is a chance to get an exceptionally fine limited and numbered edition of this rare and historical maritime book.
