Concho belts are traditional Native American accessories, most closely associated with Navajo and other Southwestern tribes, that combine functional craftsmanship with striking ornamentation. Typically made of leather and adorned with large, oval or round silver plaques called conchos—often decorated with stamping, repoussé, engraving, or set with turquoise—these belts originated in the late 19th century, inspired partly by Spanish and Mexican metalworking traditions. Over time, they evolved into highly symbolic works of wearable art, reflecting cultural identity, status, and artistry. Today, concho belts are treasured both as ceremonial regalia and as collectible pieces that highlight the enduring legacy of Native silversmithing.
