Naoto Nakagawa was born in 1944 in Kobe, Japan, and immigrated to New York City in 1962, where he has exhibited widely ever since, returning to exhibit in his birth country since the 1980s. His early shows included the avant-garde Judson Gallery in New York (1968) and later exhibitions at Obelisk Gallery in Boston, OK Harris, Allan Frumkin, Victoria Munroe, and Feature Inc., as well as Fuji Television Gallery and Tamada Projects in Tokyo. A two-part survey of his work was recently held at White Box and Ethan Cohen Fine Arts, with essays by Alexandra Munroe, Eric Shiner, John Perreault, and Jonathan Goodman. Nakagawa’s paintings have also appeared in group exhibitions at major institutions such as the Guggenheim Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Venice Biennale (2005). His work is represented in prominent collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, MIT, the Worcester Museum, and Japan’s National Museums of Modern Art in Osaka and Kyoto. A National Endowment for the Arts grant recipient, Nakagawa has taught at Columbia University and Parsons School of Design and lectured at leading museums across the United States.
