Nancy Hill Payne (1918–2012) was an American painter, writer, civic leader, and public servant whose creative life flourished alongside a long record of community involvement in Maine. Born in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, she studied art history at Radcliffe College before raising a family and later embarking on a prolific second career as an artist. Working primarily in watercolor, Payne was known for her expressive, whimsical paintings, which she exhibited regularly in regional art shows. She also wrote and self-published two books, taught art history through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the University of Southern Maine, and remained an active advocate for the arts, education, and civic engagement throughout her life. Her work reflected her enduring curiosity, optimism, and belief in the power of creativity to enrich both individual lives and communities.
