Myra Burg was born in Los Angeles, California in 1960. From an early age she developed a fascination with color, symmetry, and order. She attended California Polytechnic State University, graduating Summa Cum Laude in 1982 and becoming a licensed architect. Her specialty was design and construction administration, but she had been building and setting up art installations since 1977, eventually shifting focus to art full time in the late 1990s. Her earliest pieces were sculpted hand tufted carpet, followed by larger installations consisting of burnished aluminum channels as a system for mounting wrapped fiber cylinders to a wall. She met painter Liz Cummings during an art show, and their shared style led them to open the Cummings-Burg Gallery in 2005. At this time she came up with the concept for the Quiet Oboe, her most successful product, which expanded the wrapped cylinders into a myriad of sizes, often suspended in mid-air by steel cable to appear floating. Inspired by the Australian Didgeridoo instrument, she has referred to them as an “alternative to tapestry” that have proved very popular in modern minimalist homes, with customers including Warren Buffett, Steve Jobs, and Bill Clinton. With permanent installations in the main offices of the Sumitomo Corporation in Japan, the Mayo Clinic, and Hilton Hotels, her work continues to do well, with each piece hand-rolled and uniquely prepared for every client.
