Russian Orthodox Bronze Icon of the Crucifixion of Jesus. Traditional Russian Orthodox depiction of Jesus on the cross, with Mary, Joseph, and the Apostles on either side, with the depiction of God and the angels above. Pressed metal mounted to a dark red velvet back.

Russian Orthodox cross icons are a distinctive form of Christian iconography in the Russian Orthodox tradition, characterized by their symbolic representation of Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection. These icons often feature the Byzantine-style cross, with three horizontal bars: the top one represents the inscription “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews,” the middle one represents the main crossbar where Christ’s hands were nailed, and the bottom one, slanted in many cases, symbolizes the footrest, with its upward angle representing the penitent thief’s ascent to Heaven. The composition and colors of Russian Orthodox cross icons are rich in symbolism, with gold and other vibrant colors highlighting the divine light, and often, the surrounding saints or angels. These icons are deeply revered as sacred art, used in religious worship and personal devotion, serving as a window into the divine and a tool for prayer and reflection.
