This is an etching by Mortimer Menpes entitled "A Breton Farmer". Menpes was born in Port Adelaide, his family moved to England in 1875, he attended art school there and exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1880. He was taught etching as a pupil of Whistler, whose influence along with Japanese design is evident in Menpes' later works. He went to South Africa during the Boer War and became a wartime artist, then traveled throughout Europe and Asia, where his illustrations were published as travel books. The title is inscribed in pencil in the margin at the bottom and the piece is priced at 1 guinea on the far right. The overall size is 15 1/4 x 13 1/4 in. wide and the sight size is 9 1/4 x 7 1/4 in. wide.
