Monumental Chinese Blue and White Porcelain Charger. Very large Chinese porcelain charger with cobalt chrysanthemum and foliate decoration on white, ruffled rim.
Size: 27 1/2 x 27 1/2 x 3 in.
Chinese chargers are large, wide-rimmed porcelain dishes that often served both functional and decorative purposes, prized for their impressive scale and elaborate surface decoration. Produced from the Ming dynasty onward, especially at the Jingdezhen kilns, chargers provided a broad canvas for artisans to showcase intricate designs in underglaze blue, famille verte, or famille rose enamels. Common motifs included dragons, phoenixes, landscapes, and auspicious symbols, rendered with striking clarity and vibrancy. While some were used domestically for banquets or ritual display, many were made specifically for export to Europe and the Middle East, where their size and artistry made them coveted collector’s pieces. Today, chargers stand out as statement works of Chinese porcelain, embodying both technical mastery and cross-cultural appeal.
