Montblanc is a German manufacturer and distributor of luxury goods, founded in Berlin in 1906 by a banker named Alfred Nehemias and an engineer named August Eberstein. Originally called Simplizissiumus-Füllhalter, it moved to Hamburg in 1907 and changed its name to Simplo Filler Pen Co. GmbH, before going through several other owners over the next twenty years. Its current name was adopted in 1934. The company began with (and is still most known for) manufacturing luxury pens. Montblanc was acquired by Alfred Dunhill Ltd. in 1977, following which lower price pens were dropped, and the brand was used on a wide range of luxury goods other than pens, including bags, perfumes, small leather goods, and watches. In 1993 Montblanc became part of the Swiss Richemont Group. Its sister companies include luxury brands Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Chloé, and Baume et Mercier. Montblanc is owned, through Richemont, by the South African Rupert family. To this day Montblanc fountain pens are considered to be among the best in the world, and are collected for their smooth writing capabilities as status symbols, artwork, and investments. The most expensive regular production fountain pens are traditionally Montblancs, with some retail pens selling in excess of $30,000, and specialty and limited edition pens selling for substantially more.
