Molly Stone was born in 1950 in Columbus, Ohio. She studied at the Columbus College of Art, where she first discovered glass. She transferred to the University of California, Berkeley to pursue the craft, eventually receiving her B.A. in Art in 1975. After trying to form her own studio and finding difficulty with the techniques, she spent a year each at the Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood, Washington (1977), the California College of Arts and Crafts (1978) and finally at the Orrefors Glassworks in Sweden (1979). When she returned to the United States she met Michael Cohn, with whom she began collaborating, opening the Cohn-Stone Studios in Richmond, California, where they have both worked ever since. Stone received a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in 1981, and later the Niche Award for outstanding glass in 1994. She has been featured in numerous exhibitions nationally and internationally dating back to 1980, with many solo tours through Japan and the opportunity to create ornaments for the White House Christmas Tree in the late 1990s. Her work is included in the permanent collection of the Corning Museum of Glass, Detroit Institute of Art, The Tampa Museum of Art, the Charles A. Wustum Museum of Fine Art in Racine, Wisconsin, and the First Contemporary Glass Museum in Alcorcon, Madrid, Spain.
