Plate XXXII and P1020L in the upper right-hand corner, this engraving depicts a Common Coot, by R Mitford; Mitford (1781 - 1870) was a noted British etcher and engraver and the brother-in-law of Prideaux John Selby (1788 - 1867), a noted British etcher and engraver whose works are featured here in this auction; Mitford was taught to etch and engrave by Thomas Bewick in Newcastle and Mitford passed on what he learned to Selby; unframed, Mitford’s name usually appears to the right of the bird’s name at the bottom of the plate; the plate measures 21 3/4 x 26 and the image is 16 x 21 3/4 in. wide, to benefit the Sarasota Audubon Society.
