Miriam And Other Poems, John Greenleaf Whittier 1871.
This poetry book is titled "Miriam And Other Poems", written by John Greenleaf Whittier and published in Boston by James R. Osgood in 1871.
The book is bound in green cloth, with gilt lettering and Osgood's monogram on the spine, the front cover is stamped in gilt, with bevelled edges, brown endpapers, an illustrated frontis, a vignette title page dated 1871, the copyright page is dated 1870, two pages dedicated to Frederick Barnard, a Contents page, and 106 pages of text. BAL says it is a first edition in the first state because it has binding 1 with Osgood's monogram - the publisher's monogram - on the spine. See BAL 21889.
The book is 8vo. and measures 7 1/8 x 4 7/8 in. wide, with a tight binding and clean pages and text, and just a couple of faint brown spots in the margins that you have to look for to find. The crown and heel have bumps and light rubbing, there are light specks of rubbing along the bevelled edges and at the top edge and tips, the endpapers have slight wear at the tips and there are two small white spots on the rear endpapers, and still an attractive copy of this poetry book by Whittier, and it is in the first state.
