Minamata (W. Eugene Smith, Aileen Smith). Minamata is a powerful photojournalistic work by W. Eugene and Aileen M. Smith documenting the human and environmental devastation caused by industrial mercury poisoning in the Japanese fishing community of Minamata in the 1970s. Blending stark black-and-white photography with firsthand reporting, the book centers on the lived experiences of victims suffering from severe neurological illness — later known as Minamata disease — while exposing corporate negligence and the social struggle for recognition and justice. The Smiths’ intimate approach emphasizes dignity, resilience, and the moral urgency of environmental accountability, making the book both a landmark in documentary photography and a deeply human record of industrial harm.
