Depicts two small ships sailing near the shore, two men man the boat nearest the viewer. The full sails carry the vessel forward as a man in a blue coat commands the rudder and a man in a red coat sits, relaxing. Sold in As Is condition, there is a hold in the mid-left side of the board as well as on the right side.

Miles Edmund Cotman was born in 1810. His father taught him to paint and by thirteen, Cotman was being exhibited by the Norwich Society. Over the next ten years, Cotman had shown sixty works before the society’s closure in 1833. Cotman’s watercolours followed the style of his father's more brightly coloured works of the late 1820s and early 1830s and he was especially fond of painting shipping scenes, sometimes based on sketches made aboard a small boat owned by the Cotman family on trips along the coast to the Thames estuary and the River Medway. From the mid-1830s Cotman exhibited frequently in both London and Norwich, many of the works being in oil. Location A/B
