Mike Machat (born 1944) is an American aviation artist, author, and historian celebrated for his detailed and dynamic depictions of historic and contemporary aircraft. Growing up on Long Island with a passion for airplanes, Machat traded early artwork for flight lessons and later served in the U.S. Air Force before earning a BFA from California State University, Long Beach. He has produced paintings, murals, and illustrations that appear in museums, corporate collections, and private holdings, including the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum and the Museum of Flying in Santa Monica. As a founding member and first president of the American Society of Aviation Artists (ASAA), Machat has helped define and elevate aviation art as a serious genre, while also authoring books and contributing scholarship that documents aerospace history through his distinctive, technically precise, and visually compelling artwork.
