All Star Trading, founded in California in 1936 by Japanese-American Setsuo Aratani, initially specialized in imports from Japan but closed after the outbreak of World War II. After the war, Aratani’s son George and partner Alfred Funabashi revived the business as American Commercial Inc., first selling flash-frozen tuna and later focusing on Japanese china under the trademark “Mikasa” by 1957. Alfred Blake joined in 1965, boosting sales, expanding the product line to include crystal stemware, opening a New York showroom, and launching retail outlets. By 1985, Mikasa reached $137 million in sales, but rising Japanese currency and U.S. economic issues led to losses, prompting Blake to move production to Malaysia, Thailand, and Yugoslavia. Mikasa expanded internationally with a European joint venture in 1991 and an IPO in 1994, before being acquired by Lifetime Brands, Inc. in 2008, which retained the Mikasa brand.
