Mieko Yoshihara was born in Tokyo in 1961. As a child her family was involved in various avant garde art movements that swept Japan in the aftermath of World War II, and she began to draw, paint, and explore printmaking while still in school. After being exposed to high definition photography by a visiting German friend of the family, she began to visit the country regularly, routinely exhibiting her work at galleries and school there as well as in Holland and arranging touring exhibitions of contemporary German artists in her home country as well. A successful solo tour of the United States in the 1980s led to representation through the Annex Galleries in California, as well as her becoming a highly sought lecturer on sound art, avant garde art history, and theories of Non-Art and Anti-Art. In the late 1990s she became the curator of the Tokushima Modern Art Museum, where she continues to work and exhibit her pieces as well as teaching and encouraging budding abstract artists.
