The Torah is the central and most sacred text of Judaism, comprising the first five books of the Hebrew Bible—Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy—also known as the Pentateuch. Traditionally believed to be divinely revealed to Moses, the Torah outlines the origins of the world, the history of the Israelites, and the foundational laws and ethical teachings that guide Jewish life and worship. It is written in Hebrew on a parchment scroll, painstakingly hand-copied by scribes according to strict religious standards. The Torah is read aloud in synagogue services, particularly during Sabbath and holiday rituals, and holds deep spiritual and cultural significance as a living symbol of Jewish identity, learning, and continuity across generations.
