Michael Leo Schaff (1945-2025) was an American artist and a foundational figure in the Washington, D.C., disability arts and advocacy community. A founding core member of L'Arche Greater Washington, D.C., and a long-time resident artist at Art Enables from 2003 to 2020, Schaff produced a distinct body of work centered on gestural mark-making and expressive movement. Working primarily with acrylics, colored pencils, and mixed media, his intricate, layered compositions rendered dynamic scenes often inspired by history, portraiture, and narrative events. Drawing stylistic comparisons to artists like Cy Twombly and Joan Mitchell, his expressive lines and intuitive pointillism imbued his subjects with remarkable energy and atmospheric depth. Today, his legacy survives through both his extensive artistic catalog and his profound personal impact on the D.C. arts community.
