Michael Cheval was born in 1966 in the small town of Kotelnikovo, Russia. His grandfather was a professional artist and sculptor, his grandmother wrote children’s poems, and his aunt was a musician. Cheval’s passion for drawing developed at an early age, and in 1980 the family moved to Germany, where the beautiful museums, extravagant castles, and ancient scenic streets and landscapes all inspired his storybook-like style. A rebellious youth, he played in a rock’n’roll band and wrote poetry instead of attending classes, but when he graduated he was conscripted into the Soviet Army for two years, which instilled in him both a strong work ethic and a fierce hatred of regimented society. In 1986 Cheval moved to Turkmenistan, where he took formal training at the Ashgabat School of Fine Arts. Exposed to Eastern philosophy and the character of Central Asia, far removed from the suspicious heart of the Soviet Union, he flourished, holding his first solo exhibition in 1990 at the Turkmenistan National Museum of Fine Art. In 1994, following growing commission requests, Cheval moved to Moscow and worked as an independent artist and illustrator for various publishing houses, although once he gained international acclaim he used it to procure his escape and immigration to the United States in 1997. Within a year he was accepted as a member of the National Arts Club in New York City, winning their Exhibition Committee Award. His grasp of absurdism and surrealism, stymied under the defunct Russian regime, was lauded in the Western world, and earned him representation through Park West and other galleries, as well as a worldwide following for his blend of Pop Art and realism. Finally free to explore music, he always paints while listening to rock, jazz, classical music and more, often crafting images based on the musicians and styles he absorbs in the moment. Cheval has published two books of his artwork and two 24-page catalogs of his most popular paintings, and continues to hold yearly exhibitions at the Wyland Galleries of the Florida Keys, Ocean Blue Galleries in St. Petersburg and Winter Park, Florida, the Signature Gallery Group in Las Vegas, and more.
