Flourishing in the Valley of Oaxaca from around 700 BC to 1521 AD, the Zapotec civilization developed one of Mesoamerica’s earliest writing systems and a sophisticated calendar. Renowned across Central America for their jade jewelry, fine weaving, and monumental stone sculpture, the Zapotecs built the hilltop city of Monte Albán into a formidable regional power. Consolidated under a single ruler around 300 AD, their unassailable mountain capital allowed them to maintain political and military dominance for centuries until civil unrest and environmental hardship weakened the state. Following the fall of their rival Aztec neighbors, the Zapotecs surrendered to Spanish forces in 1521, avoiding total physical devastation through a relatively peaceful conquest. While Spanish colonization ultimately brought forced labor and the destruction of cities, the Zapotec people preserved much of their language, traditions, and artistic heritage. Today the Valley of Oaxaca stands as a thriving cultural hub, celebrated for its rich history and vibrant community of modern Zapotec artisans.
