The Meriden Britannia Company was formed in 1852 in Meriden, Connecticut, as a manufacturing company focused on producing wares in britannia metal. By 1876 they had grown to be the largest silverware company in the world. By 1891 Meriden Britannia had warehouses in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, London, and Paris, with a branch factory in Hamilton, Ontario. Over eight square acres of the city of Meriden was devoted to the company floor surface alone. In the early 1900s the company combined with International Silver Company, at which time it began manufacturing items under the Meriden Silver Plate Company label. Today many pieces from their catalogs can be found in museums around the world, a testament to their quality and legacy.
