Freemasonry refers to fraternal organizations that trace their origins to the European guilds of stonemasons that regulated their qualifications and interaction with authorities and clients from the 14th Century onward. Private Lodges (for a state, province, or other national border) are usually supervised at the regional level by a Grand Lodge. There is no international Grand Lodge that supervises all of Freemasonry, particularly since many modern Freemasons have discarded some of the original regulations, including disallowing women to join and policies regarding religion and politics. Symbology and numbers have played a vital role in the history of the Freemasons, with numerous nation-specific groups focusing on different numbers to delineate themselves. The Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry is the most widely practiced Rite in the world, breaking their philosophy into degrees from 1st to 33rd, referring to the tools used by masons to measure in medieval times. The number 32 inside a triangle on this particular ring refers to 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Freemasonry, sometimes called the “University of Freemasonry” because it uses extensive allegory and dramatic presentation to explore the philosophy, history, ethics, and fundamental truths that guide Freemasons’ lives. To attain the 32nd Degree, the second highest possible in the Scottish Rite, one must first be a Master Mason in good standing.
