The first edition was published in 1825 and this is a limited edition that was published in 1892. The limitation page reads “Of this Edition of the Memoirs of Fouche, One Hundred and Fifty Copies are Printed for England and America.” The book is 3/4 bound, with five raised bands, six compartments with gilt rules, gilt titles, gilt decorations and “1892” in gilt on the spine, marbled covers and marbled endpapers, a frontis portrait of Fouche protected by a tissue guard, the title page, three pages of the Author’s Preface, a List of Plates, which include engravings of Napoleon and Josephine, 469 pages of text plus an Index, for a total of 474 pages in all, and the top edge is gilt. Joseph Fouche (1759 - 1820) was a French statesman and a prominent member of the French Revolution, leading many bloody executions and helping to establish the Cult of Reason. He was Minister of Police under First Consul Napoleon Bonaparte and particularly known for the ferocity with which he suppressed the Lyon insurrection during the Revolution and for being Minister of Police under the Directory, the Consulate, and the Empire. The book measures 10 x 6 3/4 in. wide, the binding is tight and the pages and text are clean, with occasional light brown spots in the margins (they don’t affect the text), light wear at the crown, light rubbing on the bands and along the spine, one chip on the spine just below the crown, and light rubbing at the tips. #184 #1536
