Mayumi Morino was born in Tokyo in 1941, and studied printmaking at the Print Workshop of Japan Artists Association before obtaining an MA in Oriental Art History at Waseda University. His earliest etchings were influenced by the mono-ha movement of the 1960s and 70s, which sought to incorporate natural and found objects in art, resulting in unique pieces he termed “heatgraphs” as well as many traditional and experimental woodblocks. Since the early 80s he has taught art at various Japanese universities and art schools, and is currently a Professor of Fine Art at Tama Art University. He has exhibited in various countries around the world including the United States, United Kingdom, and Yugoslavia, with major solo exhibitions including the 1997 Cuba International Print Competition in Havana, the Millennium Graphica in Taipei and Yokohama in 2000, and the seventh Nippon International Contemporary Art Festival, Tokyo International Forum. His works are found in many private and public collections, including at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Auckland Art Museum, and the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art.
