Maxfield Parrish (1870-1966) was an influential American painter and illustrator celebrated for his vibrant, idealised imagery during the Golden Age of Illustration. Born in Philadelphia in a Quaker society to a painter and an etcher, he was encouraged in his early talent and sent to Europe to study, where he developed a distinctive technique of applying meticulously layered translucent glazes over a white base, creating a glowing luminosity that popularized a specific hue known as “Parrish Blue.” After studying architecture and painting at Haverford College, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and the Drexel Institute of Art, Science & Industry, he began a prodigious output of nearly 900 pieces of art including calendars, greeting cards, and magazine covers. His iconic 1922 work Daybreak became the most widely reproduced art print of the 20th Century, cementing his immense popularity across millions of American households. He also produced children’s books and commercial advertisements, and was an avid machinist who engineered his compositions using projected photographs and geometric models. In his later decades, he stepped away from figurative commercial art to paint serene, light-filled landscapes from his home at the Cornish Art Colony in New Hampshire, inspiring generations of future artists including Norman Rockwell and the Neo-Realists.
