Max Howard (Born 1946) American, Cat Tails Welded Metal Art. The incredibly delicate metal sculpture sways in the breeze, with a ringed bottom for support of the green painted stems and the cylindrical reeds at top. A beautiful tribute to nature by one of 20th Century America's most gifted metal artists.
Size: 17 x 10 x 10 1/2 in.
Max Howard was born in 1946 in Huntersville, North Carolina, and spent much of his impoverished youth along the river and woods near his home, collecting scraps of tin, wood, and other materials to build his own tree houses and discovering an interest in construction along the way. He began welding in 1965, learning the skill from his father, and went on to become the youngest certified welder in the state’s history in 1968. After his work garnered interest from local patrons who recognized his artistic flair and he was encouraged by his wife Joe Lynn to enter a local art show, he shifted his trade to self-taught steel sculpting making that continues to this day, working predominately with steel, copper, and brass as well as rarer substances like titanium at his home studio, Max Howard Sculpture.
