Mary Ann Carroll, an African-American landscape and skyscape painter, was born in Sandersville, Georgia, and moved to Fort Pierce, FL when she was 9 years old. She showed artistic abilities at a young age and was drawn into the Highwayman artistry as a teenager. Mary Ann Carroll had the distinction of being the only female Highwaymen member. The African-American artists were kept out of white-owned galleries, thus they took to the road to sell their work. For Carroll, that meant sometimes driving all the way to Miami to sell her paintings. She always made sure she had enough gas to get back to her seven kids waiting at home for dinner.
