Marvin Oliver was born in Seattle to parents who were elementary and college teachers. He was raised in the Bay Area of San Francisco, and spent many summers in Washington state where his father was a member of the Quinault Indian tribe, and in the Southwest, where his mother was a member of the Isleto Pueblo. He was fascinated by the pottery-making processes that he found there on family visits to different pueblos.
In many of his pieces, he draws on his Indian heritage of spirit figures, ravens and other figures that are generic but often abstracted by him and not specific to any tribe.
