Marius-Ernest Sabino was born in Sicily on September 9th, 1878 and was trained as a woodcarver before emigrating to France in his teens. He became a master glazier and sculptor whose pioneering compression-molded glass techniques significantly influenced modern glassmaking during the interwar period, shifting his focus to glass after becoming fascinated by the possibilities of electric lighting and light diffusion. He opened Sabino Paris Glass in 1919, and gained international fame at the 1925 International Exhibition of Decorative Arts, leading to high-profile commissions for luxury ocean liners like the S.S. Normandie. He was particularly renowned for his opalescent “golden glass,” a signature iridescent blue achieved by adding arsenic to the crystal, and his business success extended globally, earning him the Legion of Honor and a prestigious commission to light the palace of the Shah of Persia. The Nazis shuttered his factories during World War II, and he gave control of the company to his adopted son afterwards, dying in obscurity on October 30th, 1961, but his original molds remained popular even after they were eventually sold to an American company in 1978 that continues to produce his designs today under the same name.
