Mario Sanchez (1908-2005) was a self-taught Cuban-American folk artist celebrated for his vividly colored, bas-relief wood carvings. His work depicted the lively street scenes, cultural traditions, and daily life of his native Key West, Florida. Sanchez used bright, cheerful hues to portray the island's multicultural community, capturing the charm and humor of its cigar makers, musicians, and street vendors. Deeply rooted in local history and personal memory, his art stands as a nostalgic record and a testament to Key West's enduring Cuban heritage.
