Marilyn Simandle (b. 1946) American, Oil on Canvas Street-Harbor Views. Titled: “Como Comfort” The viewer looks across a harbor scene where two small boats rest on either side of a sailboat. The street beyond shows a shaded terrace eatery with tables and chairs full of people enjoying the beautiful afternoon sun. Flowering plants in hues of purples and pinks add a beautiful depth of color to the work. This piece comes with a light bar which adds a layer of atmospheric lighting. She began painting with watercolors at six years old. She went on to graduate with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from San Jose State University. She shifted to using oils but used all the knowledge and skill she developed as a watercolorist - this gives her work an extremely unique look and feel. As a traveler and photographer, Simandle finds an endless source of inspiration for her work. She explores and emphasizes the complexity of light and the way it plays on its surroundings, especially against architectural structures. Simandle has received the prestigious "High Winds Medal" from the Watercolor Society in 1992 and 1993; in 1997 the Oil Painters of American (OPA) West Coast Regional "First Place"; "People Choice Award", OPA National Show, 1998; and the Shiryl Smithson OPA Memorial Award in 1999, among may others.
