Margret Bering was born in Cologne, Germany on April 11th, 1937. She immigrated to the United States in 1968 and settled in California, where she studied tole painting (a decorative folk art applying painted designs on wood or tin surfaces) for five years under Antoinette Cox in Carmel. She began painting watercolors in 1990, and had her first solo exhibition in Seaside, California in 1994. Her second exhibition was in Ueberlingen, Germany in 1995, where she began to focus more and more on painting historic houses, making it her primary focus once she moved to Sarasota, Florida in 2004 after receiving numerous commissions there. She continues to paint highly sought watercolors of residences throughout the Suncoast to this day.
