Marc Chagall (1887–1985) was a Russian-born French artist whose poetic, dreamlike imagery made him one of the most distinctive figures of twentieth-century modernism. Born into a Hasidic Jewish family in Vitebsk, in present-day Belarus, Chagall drew deeply on Jewish and Russian folklore, childhood memories, love, music, and religious themes. After studying in St. Petersburg, he moved to Paris in 1911, where he absorbed influences from Cubism, Fauvism, and the avant-garde while developing his own intensely personal style of floating figures, vivid colors, and fantastical imagery. His career encompassed painting, drawing, printmaking, stage design, ceramics, mosaics, and stained glass, including major commissions for the Paris Opera and other public buildings. Forced to flee Nazi persecution during World War II, he lived in the United States before returning to France in 1948, where he continued working until his death in Saint-Paul-de-Vence.
