Born Moishe Shagal in Vitebsk, Russia, in 1887, Marc Chagall overcame early hardships and developed a highly personal artistic style after moving to Paris in 1910, where he became associated with the pioneers of Surrealism. During World War II he escaped Nazi-occupied France with the help of Varian Fry, later returning to France after the war. Working across painting, printmaking, stained glass, and theater design, Chagall remained one of the 20th century's most celebrated artists until his death in Vence, France, in 1985.
